Tough times!

I'm a lawyer - a fairly young one (I'm turning 30 on Monday, but have actually been practicing since the end of 2004, which makes it close to 5 years at this point) and the other day, I was in court (I'm a public defender). I was losing my voice because I'm fighting off a cold and the Judge looks at me and goes "Well, your husband must be happy that you're losing your voice." My response: "Judge, was that really necessary?"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091965591527056142.post-17729350781941271332009-03-06T22:35:00.000-05:002009-03-06T22:35:00.000-05:00I am so glad to have gone down a different path an...I am so glad to have gone down a different path and never had to put up with such shit. Sorry you had to take a stand, and our society doesn't just treat men and women equally for equal work.

I'm also sorry to hear so many men ogled you. As a man, I have to tell you in all honesty, we enjoy looking at women. But that's no excuse - men shouldn't be sending you tiny bikinis and asking you to wear them. They should be complimenting your teaching skills, not your outfit.

My daughter is super smart and accomplished, very athletic, and beautiful. She is hottie material. I am raising her to have a strong inner compass and good self esteem. I want her work efforts to be highly regarded, despite her looks.

btw - I understand the sexism a bit, as I feel directed toward me since I'm a half-time single dad. Whenever I volunteer at the school, a host of moms figure I'm clueless and don't know how to deal with children. Silly them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091965591527056142.post-56719517516276903672009-03-05T08:29:00.000-05:002009-03-05T08:29:00.000-05:00Well on the flip side of that at my job, a male co...Well on the flip side of that at my job, a male cooworker is not able to do the same things as the females and in childcare both females and males have been guilty of inappropriate things, so who is to say he can't do the same things as a woman. So sad to see these things in 2009.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091965591527056142.post-39520892466302306782009-03-04T20:35:00.000-05:002009-03-04T20:35:00.000-05:00I am so sorry that you had to deal with such idiot...I am so sorry that you had to deal with such idiots! But good for you not sitting back and just taking it.

Unfortunately, the old boys network is still alive and kicking today. There may be more programs geared towards diversity and women's issues but the huge bank HQ I worked at REQUIRED females to wear high heels in a certain part of the firm. There were a lot of other sexist things going on there but I won't go into it. I did get my payback. A few times actually in the public space and let me tell you it felt so good! I stuck to the man for all those who didn't have the courage or the opportunity.

Here is an interesting article from the cover of this months Forbes about the old boys network on Wall Street and a group of women suing Citigroup over it. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2009/0316/072_terminated_women.htmlHelena Handbaskethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07249194593170413098noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091965591527056142.post-14059346251722101662009-03-04T20:17:00.000-05:002009-03-04T20:17:00.000-05:00Oh my god, that sucks. You were treated horribly just for being as good (if not better) than them as a woman.

Here's to raising boys who know how to respect women both at home and in the workplace.

-Abby
@sweetbabboo@sweetbabboohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15414489876832313768noreply@blogger.com
